The Scholar Chinese Restaurant - Yum Cha

Can't believe that i've returned to the restaurant within a week! However, it was for Yum Cha this time. It was nicely organized by a friend who knew one of the bosses and we ended up getting heaps of food (at least i thought it was heaps!). It started out with quite a few fried dishes such as the salt & pepper squid tentacles, deep-fried white bait, chinese raddish cake, deep-fried prawns. I kinda liked the salt & pepper squid because they were tasty and crispy...as if they were just outta the deep-fryer!
We,then, started getting a loads and loads of steamed dim sums such as dumplings, siu mai (chinese steamed pork and prawn dumplings), pork ribs and cheong fun (rice noodle rolls). There were so many dumplings served in bamboo steamers, and due to their resemblance...i've only uploaded a few photos of them. I liked the cheong fun wrapped around the yau tiu but for some reason one dish's yau tiu was crispier than the other =P

Siu Mai & 'dumplings'
Traditional steamed Pork Ribs
Egg Tarts, Rice Noodle Rolls, Rice Noodle Rolled around Yau Tiu
Random shot of a soya sauce and fresh chillies that i kinda liked =P Looks faaancy, huh?
Chinese Coconut Slice for dessert!

This looks good. The problem with yum-cha for non-Asians is they get crap service (I note you had contacts, which is good). Every single time we find a good yum-cha place, we go often, then it gets popular, and the Asians get better service as it gets more busy and popular. We have stopped going to many yum-cha restaurants in Canberra for this reason. We can put up with this for a la carte menu, but for yum-cha it is a very bad and humiliating experience. We can sit for ages without any food, or very little choice, even if we ask. Any solution? There's a cultural issue which always ruins it for us, eventually!

Hey Jude,
I'm so sorry to hear about that.It could be a cultural issue i reckon. Let's say that non-asians tend to be quite polite in restaurants and even if they get bad service, they don't usually complain!Whereas asians tend to complain or at least voice out that they are not happy with the service and so forth. So in a yum cha place, you kinda have to get rough unless it's a 'ordering system yum cha'. You have to go up to them or raise your hand to the waiter, who is passing by with the dim sums, and just say you would like a few in your table. You will notice that a lot of asians just signal to the passing waiters to indicate they want food. Don't be too polite and wait for it..coz you will lose out in the nice and 'freshly-steamed' dim sums! =) Just to let you know that the 'authentic' atmosphere of a dim sum place in hong kong is usually quite noisy with older ladies pushing their dim sum trolleys and ppl rushing to the trolleys with the popular dim sums! 'Survival of the fittest' can be applied in this scenario, trust me.
I just heard that Master So's Kitchen in Kippax is open for dim sums (just started this Sat) and that they are superb! I might go and try there sometime soon! i hope i helped u...Moral of the story: be rough in dim sum places, be one of us!

Thanks Yuki, good advice. Being rude doesn't come naturally to me but I will give it a go! A very interesting cultural observation.

Hey, great blog! This yum cha place sounds promising... do you know if it's still open for business? I can't find any contact info for it online and I heard that a yum cha place in Dickson had closed recently. Hope it wasn't this one, I really want to try it out!

We went to this place on the weekend for yum cha and I would have to say, without a doubt, that this was the worst yum cha place I have been to. Firstly when we got there we lined up and it seemed that noone was taking notice of the line for ages and we were about to leave when we finally got a table. I wish we had left! When we sat down there was a cart there and my boyfriend got 3 plates of food from it. Luckily cause we didn't see anymore food for about 45 minutes. They kept starting to serve the food from the other end and by the time it got even close to us all the food was gone. We could have ordered some food, but the whole point of yum cha is to see what comes around and decide what you like the look of. Anyway that's my rant for the day. Next time I need my yum cha fix I will head back out to Jamison.

Hi Susan,
Sorry to hear that you didn't have a good yum cha experience in Scholar~ what's the yum cha place in Jamison?
