Just before we headed to Londsdale Street Roasters (again) for afternoon tea, we decided to try a relatively new addition to the Canberra House, the Two Before Ten Cafe & Coffee Roasters. It has a simple and cozy atmosphere and the staff was quite attentive and friendly. What struck me most was the feature wall behind the coffee counter which had designs of strange (but cute?) creatures as well as the funky yellow urchin lights *check them out!
On this visit we ordered a Grilled Ocean Trout on Toasted Sourdough with Lemon Pickle, dill & fresh salad and a Oven Roasted Pork with House-made Apple Chutney between fresh Sourdough. Overall, both dishes were good but i think that Two Before Ten needs to brush up a bit on the presentation side - particularly referring to the unattractive salad that came with the roasted pork sandwich.
The roasted pork sandwich tasted a bit dry at first but it was actually alright afterwards (perhaps the pork was just a bit dry on the outside). Loved the combination of apple chutney and the sweet spanish onions with the roast pork - a safe but nice combination.
I personally preferred the ocean trout dish. The fish was lightly grilled and it had a nice delicate texture; it went lovely with the tangy lemon pickle (quite addictive, i have to say). Perfect for those who want to have something light for lunch.
We had a nice lunch at Two Before Ten Cafe and I will definitely come back to try their breakfast menu and also the Pot Pie - something that i saw coming out of the kitchen quite frequently.
5 snowdrop meringues:
I went there for coffee last week and it just tasted like warm milk :-( There toasted sandwich selection may entice me back.
I thought the sourdough itself was quite nice ^^ I liked the ocean trout dish better too, not because it tasted slightly better than the pork one, but also because it felt as if more effort was given in preparing that dish. The salad, for example, that came with the ocean trout sandwich actually resembled a salad - slices of tomatoes and also mustard sauce (if I remembered correctly?) resting above a bed of greens. On the other hand, the salad on the pork plate was shameful. Any greens lover's tummy would be envious of your salad at first sight, and I wished that the salad that came with the pork sandwich had a little bit more than a sheer combination of green colored leaves! Overall, good ambiance and good flavor. Hopefully, good presentation (read: good salad), on my next return :P
The ocean trout dish looks really tempting! I really like a good side salad, sometimes they can really lift a dish :)
I haven't even heard of these guys yet. Maybe they need to work the kinks out a bit more? Shame the salad spoilt the dish.
I looooove their coffee! I've been 3 times and each time the flat white I ordered was excellent. And we've tried their roasted beans at home and been impressed too.
I had breakfast there last week too. I had the poached eggs on sour dough with pesto, mushroms and tomato. It was really delicious altho I could have done with a little more pesto. I have found the staff to be very friendly and attentive: like they valued my custom - so rare elsewhere.
In all this cafe has become a favourite haunt of mine!
