Husky Bakery & Cafe

Something you must check out in Huskisson? (around Jervis Bay) The Old Baker's Van (11 Currambene Street)...where? Husky Bakery Cafe! Seeing a vintage van is so cool and the yellow colour just makes it even cuter. Husky Bakery Cafe is decorated in a way that resembles country-style bakeries which i like very much. It kinda reminds me of the bakeries in a town that i've visited in France.

Husky Bakery smells divine the moment you walk in! I just love the smell of freshly baked bread...just to imagine that lovely golden crust embracing a soft and fluffy white center... *drools. The place is often packed with people and long queues but it is a lovely place for family lunches and hang-outs with friends. Apparently, they are famous for their pies and my mission this time was to try their pies!
I tried 3 pies in total and it was definately filling! (of course they were shared...)

- Indian Curry Pie: it was ok.
- Husky Steak Pie: it was nice but i had better! :D
- Chilli Con Carne Pie with Sour Cream on top (special for the day): it had a little piece of corn chip sticking out of the pie as a decoration - i liked this combo, it tasted quite Mexican!
(There is only pictures for the Husky Steak Pie because the other ones didn't turn out quite good)

The Flute Bakery

In Fyshwick (8 Barrier Street), a little gem you find. It's odd to find it in such a location because everything else you see in Fyshwick is factory outlets, motorcars repair centres, furniture shops and warehouses enfin, the last place you'd expect to find a nice bakery as such. The first thing you'll see is a big board with the bakery's logo and it's opening times...and guess what? It's only opens from Monday to Friday (8am - 3pm).
Anyways, there i was with my camera and ready for some food snapping! It is a pretty small bakery with some French posters on the walls. To your right is a few simple tables and chairs, on your left is where the bread and artisan cakes are and right in front of you is where the oh-so-good pies and quiches are.
Since i hadn't had lunch, i wanted some savory food before devouring all the delicious cakes in the cake display (not that i managed to...). I tried the Beef Pie and the Lamb Curry Pie ($4 each). Honestly, the pies are simply awesome! A-W-E-S-O-M-E. The beef pie had a lovely oozing sauce which didn't leave any after-taste and the meat was chunky and soft. I will have to admit that the Lamb Curry Pie was really good and this is coming from a person that doesn't like lamb (AT ALL). If this was the first time I had ever tasted lamb, perhaps i woudn't be so critical and against it afterall. OK...i'll make an exception for this Lamb Curry Pie then.
Now comes my favorite part...the cakes ($5.50 each). Unfortunately for the first one that i tried, didn't have a name next to it so until my next visit, this cake shall remain without a name. It was a 2-layered mousse (the first layer was a hazelnut chocolate mousse and the second layer was a white chocolate mousse) set on top of a chocolate wafer crunch with a 'river' of chocolate running on top of the cake and decorated with some caramel crunch.
After that, i was so full that i couldn't fit another cake (as much as i wanted to), thus PLAN B: Takeaway! I took away 2 cakes: the 'Passionfruit Mousse & Pistachio Cake' and the 'Raspberry Tart with Vanilla Bean Custard'. The uniqueness of the pistachio cake was the little chocolate case filled with strawberry jam but what i really liked about the cake was the passionfruit mouse. It was light, aromatic and yummy-ly (weird invented word) soft. I quite enjoyed the combination of fresh rasberries with the vanilla bean custard, they blended well with the custard offsetting some of its sweetness.

A Day Trip Along King's Highway

This was a few weeks ago or probably a month ago. Just decided to go on a day trip along King's Highway. To be honest it was meant to be a day trip to Bungendore, but it was way too small and 1 hour was more than enough to explore the whole town. A friend had previously said that there is this bakery in Bungendore that makes the best pies around Canberra and its surrounds, so i decided to hunt for it and give it a try. The bakery is a family-owned business and it's called Gunna Doo Bakery (18 Gibraltar St.)

Bacon and Cheese Meat Pie, $3.90
I tried the Bacon and Cheese Meat Pie since the lady told me that it was the most popular one that they sell. I was never a fan of pies but I was pretty impressed by this one and the thing that amazed me the most was that it did not leave an after-taste in my mouth. The kind of taste that commercialised pies tend leave behind. Ewww!
Ohn...Bungendore being a very small town also had a very small and cosy post office!

The next stop was Braidwood, this town is bigger than Bungendore and looked more historical. I was going to try another pie at the Braidwood Deli (91 Wallace St.) but unfortunately it was closed! (maybe next time...sad...) Well, so i decided to have dinner at the Braidwood Eureka Woodfire Pizzeria just next door. I heard some good things about it before so why not give it a try? I started with the Artichoke Salad and then had a large woodfire pizza with 2 flavours: I think of of them was the Eureka Supreme and the other one had prosciutto and potato slices (i loved the potato slices as they were so soft and tasty!). The salad and the pizza were both alright. I guess it would have been better if the bottom wasn't burnt (=_=) and if they hadn't put too much prosciutto in it. Overall it was nice dinner because the place and the service were both pleasant.
I think the dinner came to about $30 something.
Can't wait for more visits to other towns around Canberra!
